Named for the 12 miles of canyon it holds, Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is narrow but deep and presents some awe-inspiring vistas. The South Rim is the side with a seven-mile-long paved road for visitors to drive along while the North Rim offers only a gravel road, making it much less popular with travelers. Those who are on the South Side will also have easier access to the park's amenities, and there are a variety of guided tours and events that originate at the visitors center. Hiking is the best way to explore the canyon, though expert kayakers can attempt to make their way down the treacherous river at the canyon floor. Some of the best trout fishing in the state takes place at this park, and many different species of wildlife can be seen in the park at various times throughout the year. The canyon sits to the west of Curecanti National Recreation Area and Gunnison National Forest and is about 15 miles northeast from Montrose.
Open daily year round.
Entry fee (7 day pass): Vehicle $15; Individual $7.
