Where the Gunnison River is slowed via the use of three dams, Curecanti National Recreation Area offers a vast variety of sights, attractions and activities for visitors of all ages and inclinations. See the largest body of water in Colorado at Blue Mesa Reservoir and go fishing for multiple species of trout and other fish in any of the three reservoirs or along the river. Trails run along both sides of the river, offering amazing views of the water, the surrounding canyon and the area's abundant wildlife. There are even boat tours that run up the upper Black Canyon and offer expert information about the area's natural and human history. The recreation area is just 15 miles west of Gunnison along Highway 50, close to other national parks including Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the Gunnison National Forest.
